Recently, different parts of Africa has come under attack from jihadist groups campaigning to implement sharia and enthrone an islamic state. The conflicts have led to loss of lives, insecurity and instability in Nigeria, Mali, Kenya and Somalia. In Nigeria, Boko Haram has killed and kidnapped hundreds of school girls and in Kenya al Shaabab militants have killed over 140 students. In this presentation, I will explore the following questions: Are jihadists really opposed to peace? What is the jihadist notion of peace? Why is 'jihadist peace' incompatible with secular peace needed in contemporary Africa and the world? Leo Igwe is the founder of the Nigerian Humanist Movement.
